Dear Starlight,

Surprise!

I’m in your inbox, and it’s Wednesday, not Sunday. I wanted to share one of my practices and invite you to play along if you feel inspired.

Do you have a relationship with the moon and its cycles? My biology is linked with the moon. For years, I bled with the new moon—until this year, when my cycle suddenly shifted to the full moon. I love sharing this rhythm with nature. However, for much of my life I didn’t know when my period was arriving or when the moon was full or covered by the sun. In fact my period would show up as an unwelcome surprise or would feel dangerously absent without any awareness of when it had last visited. Not knowing my bodies rhythm perpetuated a general unease in my life. It wasn’t until I was in my early early forties that I began closely paying attention to my cycles and how they effected me. Understanding my rhythm became an empowering way to organize my schedule and communicate needs appropriately .

I use the moon cycles as checkpoints on my life’s map. The roughly two-week mark between them feels like a natural rhythm for asking, Where am I? I set intentions and use the next moon as a point of reflection. There’s no single way to move through life, but engaging with time and desire feels more empowering than drifting endlessly in the unknown.

Lately, I’ve been deepening my moon practice by learning more about each moon’s qualities—its season, history, and mythologies—and considering them in relation to my longings. Instead of shouting HELP ME into the vast universe, it’s like knowing which doctor to call for a toothache. The new moon and full moon offer different blessings, and aligning with their energies may make a resonate difference. The same goes for me—if you need my help, don’t come knocking on the first days of my period!

New moons invite us to begin—to seed something in the dark, unafraid of scrutiny. To be hopeful, playful, and daring. To plant something that will gestate with care. Farmers and gardeners follow this rhythm to grow successful crops, and we can too, co-creating with the cosmos. Imagining this fills me with joy.

Today is the New Moon in Aquarius. Aquarius, the water bearer, is represented by The Star card in Tarot—my favorite card. (Our favorite card?) I call the Star in Tarot the cosmic gardener.

If you read my Sunday Circle this week, you know I’ve been thinking about how we come to know the wild around and within us, how we build relationships of love through practice, and how practice transforms us—practical magic.

This morning, I remembered an art project from years ago. In 2010, I created Golden Blessings, a series of found objects gilded and connected synchronistically with people's daily expressions on social media. Shortly after, I painted a series of small works that I watered to life—then let die—as a practice of being in relationship with chance, change, birth, and death.
