I want to build a sauna*! (*in reality, i asked my husband if he would be willing to build it cause he’s the one with that kind of know-how in this house.) I have started some things in motion and now for the doing. Not the sauna- that is still in fun fantasy land. The other things- they are in the keep-showing up part. The boring part. The tedium. The part that feels especially unappealing when my only real desire is for sweatpants, blankets, hot showers (in the absence of fires and saunas). Who decided the presidential term starts in Jan? Who decided this was the time of “new” year? But then nothing is really new, only rearranged or brought to light. I’ll spend the 2nd half of winter tending tiny flames.
Julie, my son tried to convince me he could build a sauna in a day by watching a youtube tutorial. I made the dire mistake of not asking him to "prove it"! But maybe I can tell him someone out there wants to challenge his statement by him demonstrating proof:) I believe you were the one who taught me when the Jewish new year was...we just passed the Chinese new year last week--you get to choose what feels right for you:) Tending small flames is devotional work. Historically the duty of the high preistesses. And, I've worn sweatpants more in the last sixty days than I've worn in my entire fourty-seven years!
Youre right- so many new years. Afterall, it is a wheel. You call the beginning now or now or now. I resisted sweatpants for far too long. Last night i went to hear music in downtown nyc. I commented to my husband about the 20 somethings around us, “They all look so comfortable!” I definitely didnt feel cozy in my going-out clothes in my 20’s. I admitted in this way, the youth have something to teach us. I write this as I wear my sweatpants.
