Thank you Julie for sharing this gem:) Wendell Berry was a large influence in the founding ideas of Place Corps the non-profit organization I co-founded and direct. This quote resonates also with John Dewey and his writings on art as life and social artist Joseph Beuys. I have been rolling this sentiment around quite a bit as it pertains to method. Meaning, what is the method and materials we want to create our art with. Meaning, how do we enact our daily lives? What do we reach for? Is it pen and paper, is it rice and beans, is it organizing and lecture, or is it flower arranging?
